Over the past few weeks in ISM, I’ve been consistently updating my Digital Portfolio, completed my second Interview Assessment, and constantly been keeping up with my interviews and scheduling more as necessary, to the point where I’m ready to ask one of the professionals I’ve met with to be my mentor. I was able to constantly update my website without procrastinating because I set reminders for myself to add each new assessment or blog I write to it, as I know my mentor, other professionals, and any general person could stumble upon my website and see the work I’ve done in ISM. And so, it’s important to make sure that it has the most relevant information on it. Completing my second interview assessment taught me the skills, and the pros/cons that come up with looking for a mentor. No professional is going to be perfect, but if you take time to analyze how your experience with them went, it’s not too difficult to find and decide on that person that you want to guide you through your ISM journey, as well as the career path you’ve chosen. Similarly to the interview assessment, scheduling and keeping track of all of the interviews I’ve had has taught me the importance of professionalism and consistency, and how it goes a long way in showing people that you’re serious about the career field you want to pursue. This also helped bring me closer to my goal of securing a mentor before we go on Winter break.
As a result of what I’ve learned about procrastination and consistency through updating my website, as well as scheduling/moving forward with my interviews, the one question that’s arisen is how to apply that same level of determination and motivation to other things I do. I’m not only talking about my other classes, but the things I do on a daily basis in general. At this point in the year, I often find it hard to keep myself motivated to do everything I’m responsible for, without complaining about it or giving it 110% effort. So if I can find a way to translate my ISM work ethic to other things, I’ll be golden.
Some challenges that I’ve faced during the past week were staying motivated to keep all of my work and responsibilities as necessary, as well as pushing myself to keep going with my interviews. Because we’re nearing the end of the first half of the school year, I feel discouraged to do a lot of my work because I feel like I’ve already drained a lot of myself out by things I did earlier in the year. However, by writing down the things that need to get done, as well as how soon they need to get done, I remind myself to look at that list and push myself to get those things as done as possible, because once I complete that checklist, I have time to do the things I enjoy and that make me happy. Additionally, I think I’ve reached that point in my interviews in ISM where I feel a little overwhelmed and stressed with finding a mentor. I’ve had 4 interviews with various professionals who are part of the accounting field, and it’s been a little stressful to take the information they’ve given me, to decide on which person would be the best fit for me. Luckily, I was able to make a pros and cons list for each of them, and now know who I want to ask to be my mentor, and I am confident that that same professional will say yes to me when I ask.
In terms of scheduling future interviews, I was able to successfully create that pros and cons list for the person I want to ask to be my mentor, and have contacted them about meeting next week to secure that mentorship. In terms of updating my Digital Portfolio , I was able to successfully add each assessment and blog that I’ve completed in ISM, so that my website is up to date with the most relevant information.
In the next week, I need to work on securing that mentorship so that I’m not stressing about it over winter break. I also need to secure that mentor so that when we return from break, I can start learning more about their profession and get experience, as well as continue on with the research that I’ve been doing since the beginning of the school year. I also need to work on finding that motivation that I have in ISM, and apply it to my other classes, as well as the tasks I’m responsible for completing on a daily basis. In doing so, I will ensure that I’m giving the same and attention to everything I do, so that it’s not lousy and truly displays my full work ethic potential.
To conclude this, I would like to say that I’m excited that I’ve almost finished interviewing professionals, and have determined who I want to be my mentor. The interviewing process has been overwhelming and stressful, but it did a good job in helping me analyze all of the different people I met, and helped me decide who would be the best fit for me. And in doing so, I can continue on with the experience and study part of ISM.
